S Video , is used on a lot of High Quality Video Equipment, like DVD's SVideo recorders, Computer Graphic Cards. It is the Seperate video signals of - Luminance (The Black & White) , Y Signal
- Chroma (Colour information), C
It is a Small 4 pin mini Din Socket, Pin Number 1 and 2 are ground , Pin 3 is S-Y (Luminance) and Pin 4 is S-C (Chroma). The Adaptors to convert this Signal to a composite Video Signal are normally around $500 ,but with a clever bit of designing these Adaptors do a very similar job and are only $8 each!
Also they are Bi directional, which means it will also convert a Composite Video Signal to a S-Video Signal or Visa Versa.
So why do some people call the SVHS adaptors or Plugs? Well when they first came out they where on SVHS Video Cameras and VCR's, but they also appear on HI8 Camcorders and DVD's so there is a little confusion about, but there real name is S VIDEO as in SUPER VIDEO !!
The S-Video Socket on a machine is only One or the other, ie it will be only an OUTPUT or INPUT, you will usually not see one socket doing both, unless there is a Switch on your VCR or TV.
